The mission this week: interview 2–3 family members about their lives and turn it into one finished, published-quality podcast episode. You'll do every job a producer does, and you'll use the same gear and software used on Devpolicy Talks.

Each day runs roughly 9:00am to 3:00pm with a lunch break and two short breaks. Every day follows the same rhythm:

  • Before questions (5–10 min, ~9:00) β€” think before you dive in.
  • Learn β€” short videos and reading, explained in plain English.
  • Do β€” the real hands-on work, with a tick-box checklist.
  • After questions (~2:45) β€” reflect on what you learned.

Everything you type and tick is saved automatically. Sign in at the top with your name and a PIN, and your work saves to the cloud and follows you to any device β€” phone, laptop or the Mac. (Until you sign in, it still saves, but only in this browser on this computer.) Words with a dotted underline have a pop-up definition: hover over them with the mouse, or tap them on a phone.

Once you're signed in, your work syncs across devices automatically β€” sign in with the same name and PIN anywhere to pick up where you left off. Export my answers also downloads a copy you can keep or email to yourself.

🎚️Your toolkit β€” the gear & software

The recording chain (how sound gets recorded)

Your voice travels through a chain of equipment. Each link has a job:

  • ATR2100x microphone β€” turns your voice into an electrical signal. It's a dynamic mic, so it ignores most room noise. Speak close, about a fist's width away.
  • Zoom H5 recorder β€” a portable recorder that captures the interview straight to an SD card. Perfect for sitting down with family. The mics plug into its two XLR inputs (XLR is the standard balanced microphone connector) and each person gets their own track.
  • Cloudlifter β€” used at the desk, with the Scarlett. The ATR2100x is a quiet, low-output mic, so the Scarlett's preamp would have to work near the top of its range, where it starts to hiss; the Cloudlifter adds a clean +25 dB (decibel) boost so the Scarlett can run lower and quieter. Less hiss, more signal. It runs on 48V phantom power (a 48-volt feed sent up the cable to power gear that needs it), supplied by the Scarlett. You don't use it with the H5 in the field β€” the H5's own preamp is quiet enough for these mics.
  • Focusrite Scarlett β€” your audio interface at the Mac. It does double duty: it's how you record any voiceover (your intro, outro and any narration), and it's how you listen while editing and mixing β€” your headphones plug into it for clean, accurate sound. It bridges the analogue mic world and the digital computer, and supplies 48V phantom power.
  • Mac Mini (M4 Pro) β€” where the editing, mixing and publishing happen.
  • ATR-M70x headphones β€” closed-back headphones so the sound doesn't leak back into the mic. Wear these whenever you record or edit.
  • TC Electronic loudness meter β€” a dedicated hardware meter at the desk that reads the true loudness (in LUFS β€” Loudness Units, the standard measure of how loud audio actually sounds) of your mix. You'll use it on Day 4 to master the episode to the right level; it isn't used while recording.

You'll use two recording setups this week:

From Day 3 onwards you're at the desk, with the Scarlett as your audio interface β€” headphones plugged into it for editing and mixing, and the mic on it whenever you record voiceover.

The software (what each program is for)
  • Descript Rooms β€” for recording your remote guest. Each person is recorded locally, in full quality, on their own device, so a patchy connection doesn't wreck the sound. It records the interview; that's all you use it for.
  • Descript β€” for the rough cut: it edits audio by editing text, so you cut out mistakes, waffle and filler words here first, in the rough stage. Easiest place to start. (It auto-transcribes only so you can cut by text β€” that transcript is rough, and the real one comes from Tattle.)
  • Adobe Audition β€” the professional audio workstation. This is where you repair, EQ (equalise, i.e. adjust the tone), compress, mix and master the episode to a polished finish.
  • iZotope RX β€” specialist repair tools (noise removal, de-clicking, de-essing). RX works two ways: as plug-ins inside Adobe Audition, and as its own standalone app (the "RX Editor") for tougher jobs β€” you'll try the standalone app on Day 4.
  • iZotope Ozone 12 β€” iZotope's mastering software, used right at the end to set the episode's final loudness. Its limiter is the Maximizer.
The same jobs, other gear (so you learn the principles, not just our kit)

You're learning on one specific set of gear, but every piece is just one way to do a job. Here's the job, and what else you'd meet in the wild:

  • Microphones β€” dynamic vs condenser. Ours (the ATR2100x) is a dynamic mic: tough, ignores room noise, needs no phantom power, which makes it ideal for an ordinary untreated room. A condenser mic (e.g. Rode NT1, Audio-Technica AT2020) is more sensitive and detailed but hears the whole room, so it wants a quiet, treated space and 48V phantom power. Many beginners start on an all-in-one USB mic (Blue Yeti, Samson Q2U) that plugs straight into a laptop.
  • Recorders β€” and 32-bit float. Our Zoom H5 records 24-bit, so you set the gain carefully to avoid clipping. Newer recorders (Zoom H5studio / H6essential / F3 / F6, Tascam Portacapture) record in 32-bit float: they capture such a huge range that the audio essentially cannot clip, so you barely set levels while recording and fix the volume afterwards on the computer. It's the biggest recent change in field recording β€” the same idea, with a much bigger safety net.
  • Audio interfaces. Ours is a Focusrite Scarlett. Universal Audio Volt, PreSonus, MOTU and Behringer units do the same job: turn an XLR mic into something the computer can record, and feed your headphones.
  • The editing app (a DAW). We use Adobe Audition. A DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) is any app that records, edits and mixes audio; the concepts (cutting, EQ, compression, noise reduction, mastering) are the same in all of them. Common ones: Reaper (cheap and powerful), Logic Pro and GarageBand (Mac), Audacity (free), Hindenburg (built for spoken word), Pro Tools (the music-industry standard), and Descript (which edits by text, as you'll do for the rough cut).
  • Remote recording. We use Descript Rooms. Riverside, SquadCast and Zencastr do the same local-recording trick (each end records itself, then uploads); a plain Zoom or Teams call also works, but at lower quality.
  • Repair & mastering. We use iZotope RX (repair) and Ozone 12 (mastering). Alternatives include Waves and FabFilter plugins, or Auphonic, an online service that cleans up the sound and sets the loudness for you automatically.
  • Loudness meter. Ours is a hardware TC Electronic unit. Most people use a software meter instead β€” Youlean Loudness Meter (free and excellent), iZotope Insight, or the one built into the DAW. Same numbers (LUFS, true peak), on a screen rather than a box.
  • Headphones. Ours are closed-back, so sound can't leak into the mic. Open-back headphones sound more natural for listening but leak, so they're for editing, not recording.
  • Hosting. We publish through Simplecast. Buzzsprout, Transistor, Captivate, Libsyn and Spotify for Creators are other hosts; each builds the RSS feed that carries your show to the apps.

🐞Tattle β€” your production HQ

Tattle is the web app Dad built for making podcasts (it's what the real Devpolicy Talks production runs on). It's the home base that ties your whole week together β€” you'll plan the episode, get it transcribed, write the script, generate the shownotes, and publish, all from one place. Sign in at tattle.idrys.org β€” ask Dad for your login (it uses a 6-digit code from an authenticator app).

Tattle runs your episode through these stages β€” you'll move it along one step at a time:

What Tattle does at each stage (and which day you'll use it)
  • Day 1 β€” Plan & research: create the episode (Interview format). On the Overview page write the title and synopsis (the premise). On the Planning page work through three tabs: add your guest on Speakers (and track consent / talent release), research the guest and the topic with AI, and build your question runsheet on Questions. Set up reusable Document Elements (intro, outro, Acknowledgement of Country), set a record date and mark it scheduled.
  • Day 2 β€” Recorded: upload your interview audio; Tattle moves the episode to recorded for you.
  • Day 3 β€” Transcribed: Tattle auto-transcribes with speaker diarisation (it labels who's talking), then AI (artificial intelligence) suggests corrections you accept or reject. This clean transcript becomes your editing map.
  • Day 4–5 β€” Scripting: drag-and-drop your episode script from template sections, and generate the intro script you'll voice.
  • Day 5 β€” Collateral & publishing: AI-generate shownotes, a summary, grab quotes, social posts and metadata, then sync the finished episode to Simplecast.

Tattle handles the planning, research, words and admin (the brief, guest and topic research, questions, transcript, script, shownotes and publishing). Descript and Adobe Audition handle the sound (cutting and polishing the audio). Together they cover the whole job.

Before Day 2, make one folder for the whole episode on the Mac. Keep everything inside it with these sub-folders:

  • raw β€” untouched recordings straight off the mic/Zoom
  • descript β€” the rough-cut export
  • audition_session β€” the Audition project + working files
  • exports β€” the final MP3 (the compressed audio file you publish) and any clips

Name files so you'll understand them in a month, e.g. 20260615_grandma_raw_host.wav. Date first (YYYYMMDD) keeps them sorting in order.

Tattle is your planning desk today. Before you record a single word, you set up the episode, research your guest and the topic, and build your questions, all in Tattle. Create the episode in the Interview format, then work through four places:

Overview β€” the brief

The Overview page is the episode's brief. Set a working title, the episode number and a target length, and write a 1–2 sentence synopsis (the premise β€” what this episode is about). Stuck? Press Generate synopsis and edit what the AI drafts. Set a record date here too, then move the episode to scheduled.

Planning β†’ Speakers β€” your guest (and consent)

On Planning β†’ Speakers, add the person you're interviewing, mark them host or guest, and track where they're up to (invited β†’ confirmed β†’ scheduled). Record their talent release here, which is the formal version of asking permission to record and publish (the consent step below). You can send them a briefing from here too.

Planning β†’ Research β€” dig into the guest and the topic

Good interviews come from good research. Two tools:

  • Research your guest: open their speaker profile and press Research Speaker. Tattle web-searches them and drafts a background bio. Read it, keep what's true, fix what isn't.
  • Research the topic: on the Research tab, ask the AI for background on the subject, your guest's history or key moments (e.g. "what are the big turning points in Grandma's life?"). Save the useful answers as research blocks and drag them into order. These become your prep notes.

Always read what the AI gives you with a critical eye: it's a fast first draft, not the truth. Check anything important against what your guest actually tells you.

Planning β†’ Questions β€” build your interview runsheet

On Planning β†’ Questions, build the running order of questions you'll actually ask. Type your own, or press AI Suggest for a first batch: it reads your guest's research and avoids repeating questions from their other episodes. Refine any single question with the sparkle button (e.g. "make it more personal"), add a topic tag, and drag them into the order you want. During the interview you can tick each one Asked and rate the answer, so the runsheet doubles as your checklist.

Once you're rolling, before the real questions, ask your guest out loud whether they're happy to be recorded and for the episode to be shared publicly, and capture that "yes" at the very start of the recording.

πŸŽ™οΈSetting up the Zoom H5

Step 1 β€” get the recorder ready (do this before your guest arrives)
  • Power: the H5 has no internal battery β€” put in 2Γ— AA batteries (or run it from USB). Fresh batteries last about 15 hours.
  • SD card: with the recorder off, slide the SD card in (face up) on the right-hand side. Turn on, then format the card in the menu so it's clean and compatible.
  • Recording mode: choose Multi File and set the format to WAV, 48 kHz / 24-bit (WAV is an uncompressed, top-quality audio file; 48 kHz / 24-bit is its quality setting, and it matches what you'll use in Audition).
  • Plug in the mics: connect each ATR2100x with an XLR cable (the standard 3-pin microphone cable) into Input 1 and Input 2 at the bottom, one mic per person, each on its own track. (Ignore the X/Y mic on top, the recorder's built-in stereo mic, for interviews.)
Step 2 β€” no phantom needed, then arm the tracks
  • The ATR2100x is a dynamic mic, so it does not need phantom power. Leave 48V off for both mics: the H5's preamps have plenty of gain for these mics on their own, so you do not need the Cloudlifter here. (The Cloudlifter and 48V phantom come in later, only on the desk setup with the Scarlett on Day 4.)
  • Arm the tracks: press the Track buttons (1 and 2) so they glow red. Only armed tracks record.
Step 3 β€” set your levels (the golden rule)
  • Each input has its own gain dial (under the little protective bar). No buttons needed β€” just turn the dial for that channel.
  • Have each person talk at normal volume. Turn their dial up until the loudest bits peak around βˆ’12 dB (decibels, the unit on the level meter) β€” strong and clear, never slamming into the top (0 dB is distortion you can't fix).
  • Build in a real safety net. The H5's Backup Record only copies the top X/Y mic (the L/R track), not Inputs 1 & 2, so it will not protect your interview mics. Instead, run a phone voice memo alongside as a genuine second recording. Never trust a single recording of an interview you can't redo.
  • Plug the ATR-M70x headphones into the H5's headphone socket and actually listen while you set levels. Your ears are the best meter.

Mic technique: speak across the mic, not straight into it, about a fist's width away. That tames "popping" Ps and breath noise.

πŸ›°οΈRecording the remote guest (Descript Rooms)

At least one interview is with a relative who isn't in the room, recorded over the internet with Descript Rooms. Descript Rooms has one job here: it records the interview. The clever part is that each person's audio is captured locally, in full quality, on their own device and then uploaded, so a patchy connection never wrecks the sound and you each land on a separate track, just like the two mics on the H5. This deserves every bit as much care as the in-person setup β€” the difference is that you're setting up a person you can't reach, down the line, so clear instructions and patience are the whole game.

Step 1 β€” get Descript Rooms and your desk ready (before the call)
  • Open a Room: in Descript on the Mac, start a Room and copy the join link. Your guest opens that link in a web browser, so they need no app, no account and no special gear.
  • Your end is the desk chain: Mic β†’ Cloudlifter β†’ Scarlett β†’ Mac, with headphones on. This is the one time you use the Cloudlifter and Scarlett to capture an interview.
  • Point Descript at the Scarlett: in Descript's audio settings, set the input to the Scarlett (not the Mac's built-in mic) and the output to your headphones, so it records your good mic and you hear the call cleanly.
  • Give yourself the best line: use a wired internet connection if you can; if not, sit right next to the router. Close other apps and tabs so the Mac isn't struggling.
Step 2 β€” set up your guest (you can't touch their gear, so coach them)

The real skill of remote recording is getting someone else's setup right from a distance, kindly and clearly. Talk them through it before you record:

  • Headphones on β€” the golden rule. Headphones stop your voice leaking out of their speakers and back into their mic, which is what causes echo. Any headphones or earbuds will do; laptop speakers are the one thing to avoid.
  • The quietest room they have, door shut. Turn off fans, the TV and notifications, put phones on silent, and settle pets. A noisy room is far easier to prevent than to fix afterwards.
  • Get close to the mic. Whatever they have β€” a headset, earbuds with a mic, a USB mic, or just the laptop β€” closer and slightly off to the side beats far away and head-on. A headset mic beats the laptop's own.
  • A solid browser: Chrome or Edge on a laptop is the safe choice, plugged in to power so it doesn't sleep mid-interview.
  • Check their level: ask them to talk at normal volume and watch their meter in Descript β€” strong and clear, never slamming the top. Ask them to roughly match your loudness, so one of you isn't tiny and the other huge.
  • Confirm local recording is on for each person (Descript records each track on its own device β€” that is what protects you from the internet).
Step 3 β€” tech-check, consent, then record (the golden rules)
  • Test first: record a 20–30 second test with both of you talking, then play it back. Listen for echo (almost always a headphones problem), background noise, clipping, and whether your two levels sit together.
  • Consent on the record: once you're rolling, before the real questions, ask your guest out loud whether they're happy to be recorded and for the episode to be shared publicly, and capture that "yes" at the very start β€” exactly as for the in-person interview.
  • Run the interview from your runsheet: a calm intro, one question at a time, and note the times of the best answers. Let them finish before you speak β€” it's kinder, and it makes the editing far cleaner.
  • Watch it the whole way: keep half an eye on the connection and on both record indicators, so you catch a problem in minute two, not at the end.
  • Backup: the safety net is that each person's audio records locally, in full quality, even if the connection stutters β€” that is the whole point of Descript Rooms. Before anyone leaves, confirm both people's tracks have finished uploading (Descript uploads them in the background); don't end the Room until they show as done.
  • Hand-off: the finished recording lands straight in Descript, ready for your rough cut on Day 3. Upload it to the episode in Tattle too.

πŸ—£οΈ Coaching a guest you can't see: send the "what you need" note the day before β€” headphones, a quiet room, a charged laptop on Chrome β€” then run the whole setup again, live, before you hit record. People forget, and it is far easier to fix a problem before you start than to rescue the audio after. That patience is what separates a clean remote recording from an echoey, unusable one.

🐞First, in Tattle β€” get your transcript

Before touching the audio, let Tattle do the listening for you. Its transcript becomes the map you'll edit from.

Why transcribe in Tattle first?
  • Speaker diarisation labels who said what, so you can see the conversation as a script.
  • AI Correction suggests fixes for misheard words β€” you accept or reject each one, so you stay in control and learn to spot errors.
  • Version history means you can always compare changes and undo. Nothing is ever lost.
  • This corrected transcript powers everything later β€” the script, shownotes, grab quotes and metadata all build on it.

βœ…Then, in Descript β€” make the rough cut

You'll see a transcript here too, but it's only a means to an end: Descript auto-transcribes so you can cut the audio by deleting words in the text. That transcript is rough, so don't trust it for accuracy β€” Tattle's corrected transcript is the real one (your reading map, and the source for the script and shownotes). Descript's text is just the handle you grab to cut the sound.

Descript's "Remove Filler Words" β€” and when not to

Descript reads the transcript and flags the filler words that pepper natural speech β€” "um", "uh", and, if you let it, "you know", "like", "so", "I mean". You can then strike them out in bulk or step through them one at a time, and the audio is cut to match. Used well it tightens a ramble; used bluntly it makes a person sound like a robot.

  • Do the content edit first. Cut whole tangents and dead sections before you hunt fillers β€” there is no point polishing "um"s out of a passage you are about to delete.
  • Cut the easy ones in bulk. "Um" and "uh" almost never carry meaning, so removing all of them is usually safe. Turn just those on and let Descript clear them in one pass.
  • Review the rest by hand. "You know", "like", "so" and "I mean" are discourse markers β€” they shape natural speech, and stripping every one leaves the talk clipped and stilted. Step through these in context and keep the ones that sound human.
  • Listen across every cut. Removing a filler makes a splice, two pieces of audio joined where the word used to be. Check the join hasn't clipped the start of the next word, swallowed a needed breath, or left an audible bump; nudge the cut or leave a tiny gap if it has.
  • Leave some in. A perfectly filler-free track sounds over-produced. A thoughtful "um…" before a hard answer can be the most human moment in the episode. Aim for clarity, not sterility.

Pitfalls: trusting "Remove all" blindly β€” the detector mis-tags a meaningful "like" or misses a stretched "uhhh", so always review; cutting so tight the speech feels rushed and breathless; and leaving clicky edits at the joins. A good test: play a minute to someone who wasn't there. If it still sounds like a normal person talking, you have it right.

Editing, repair, mixing & mastering in Audition

Goal: Bring the Descript rough cut into Adobe Audition. Clean it up (noise reduction & repair), shape the tone (EQ & compression), then mix and master to a polished, podcast-ready file.

πŸ› οΈThe clean-up & polish steps

What each tool actually does
  • Noise Reduction β€” capture a "noise print" from a second of silence (room tone), then tell Audition to subtract that hum/hiss everywhere. Go gently to avoid a "underwater" sound. iZotope RX is the specialist version of this.
  • Healing / spectral repair β€” paint out one-off clicks, mouth noises or a stray bump.
  • Parametric EQ (equalisation, precise control of the tone) β€” roll off low rumble, add a little "presence" so speech is clear, tame any harshness.
  • Compression β€” gently evens out the loud and quiet bits so the voice stays steady.
  • Mastering & loudness β€” the final step. Podcasts are delivered to a target loudness, not just a peak level, so the whole episode sits at a steady volume. Watch the TC Electronic loudness meter and bring the integrated loudness of the finished episode to βˆ’16 LUFS (the house standard for this show), keeping the true peak under about βˆ’1 dBTP so nothing distorts. Master in iZotope Ozone 12 and use its limiter, the Maximizer (which raises the overall level and stops the loudest peaks from clipping), to bring it up to βˆ’16; then re-check the integrated reading across the whole episode. The two interview tracks are summed to mono for delivery. You'll see βˆ’16 LUFS quoted as the streaming/stereo figure and βˆ’19 for mono in a lot of guides; both are fine β€” what matters is picking one target and hitting it consistently, and ours is βˆ’16.

πŸŽ›οΈThe mixing chain β€” what order, and why

Order matters as much as the effects themselves: repair before you shape, shape before you level, level before you polish, and treat the limiter as a safety net rather than a loudness machine. Work on the host and guest on separate tracks β€” their mics, distances and voices differ β€” then balance the two so neither buries the other.

The spoken-word chain, step by step
  1. Repair first. Clean before you shape β€” there is no sense EQ-ing or compressing a hiss you could simply remove. Take out steady hum and hiss, and one-off clicks and mouth noises, with iZotope RX or Audition's Noise Reduction. If a recording sounds boxy or distant, reach for de-reverb, never added reverb.
